Dental insurance: five things to compare

Compare provider networks, annual maximums, deductibles, waiting periods and treatments before enrolling.

The key ideaA dental annual maximum usually limits what the plan pays; it is different from a medical plan's out-of-pocket maximum.

Confirm your dentist before choosing

Cigna recommends checking whether your dentist participates in the network and how coverage is divided among preventive, basic and major services. If you expect treatment, ask the office for its description and request an estimate using the exact plan.

Understand the annual maximum

The dental annual maximum limits what the plan pays for certain services during the year. After reaching it, you may owe additional costs. Ask about the limit, exceptions and what happens if treatment spans several visits.

Review waiting periods, frequency and prior work

Some plans include waiting periods, frequency limits or rules for missing teeth and prior treatment. Ask about the service you need, rather than relying on the phrase “includes dental.” Cigna highlights these points as part of an informed comparison.

Do not assume adult dental is included

Marketplace dental coverage may be included in a medical plan or offered separately. Adult dental coverage is not a mandatory essential health benefit. HealthCare.gov says a separate dental plan purchased there must be bought alongside a health plan.

Distinguish dental from vision

If an offer combines benefits, request the details for each. Ask what applies to visits, treatments and vision items. A single premium or card does not mean all services have the same conditions.

For your next conversation

  • Verify your dentist in the exact network.
  • Request the annual maximum and deductible.
  • Ask about waiting periods and limits for planned treatment.
  • Separate dental benefits from vision benefits.
